Our Appliances Have Arrived!

Lowes delivered all 7 of our major kitchen and laundry appliances to our Turin Road home this week.  We held off as long as possible hoping to get them right to the 1834 house, but alas they must sit in our garage for a month or so until we are ready for them.  I am meeting with the Lowes kitchen designer today to order the cabinets which will take a few weeks to come in.

Joel borrowed Larry the other day and the two of them worked down at the water's edge shoring up the deck which has been pulling away from the land.  I find it fascinating that it not only stands on stilts, but is also tethered to the hillside by cables.  They are strengthening all points of contact.

The pallet of hardiplank was finally delivered and the guys were able to finish the side entryway.  I really like the way it looks!

Inside, Steve did a test run of the plumbing and heating systems by running water through all the pipes and tubes.  No leaks!!  He also installed the beautiful floor plank that we had picked out and set aside as our mantle.  Between that and the new hearth, our dining room fireplace is really looking great.

Last weekend we tested the outdoor fireplace.  Not that we are rushing autumn or anything, but the fire sure felt wonderful on our chilly feet!

Just When We Thought the Challenges were Behind Us...

All winter long I kept noticing and focusing on the fact that the west side back roof seemed arched.  I wondered how Steve was going to fix the problem when the time came.  Well, here we are...the curve is due to the fact that some time ago a new roof was built on top of an old, rotting  roof using little blocks of wood and longer stretches of wood crisscrossing them to attach the new roof to.  Over time, both roofs bowed in and when Steve re-supported the back part of the house, the tension caused the middle to arch up.  The solution?  Tear off the entire roof and start over with new materials on the new rafters.  For the time being we have no roof at all! (the first picture is a little deceiving due to the angle...the house doesn't bow out...the roof just arches up!)

Within the next 2 days Steve and the guys will lay on some Zip plywood then reinstall the metal
roof.  Hopefully now we are done with the major setbacks.

Other great things are happening all around the house, though.  The beautiful piece of brownstone that Steve recently picked up at a quarry has found a new home as our dining room hearth.  The outdoor dining area pillars have been decoratively wrapped and now just need a second coat of paint.  The ceiling and door frame of our side entrance have been installed, and Joel has been working inside ripping out old door frames to free up the spaces into and out of the den.  It makes a huge difference in the feeling of openness.

We are expecting delivery of the hardiplank siding today so Steve can finish making the house green.  Word has it that our concrete patios and walkways will be started late next week, and the insulation man is coming the first week of September!

Fun times with Family and Friends

I was pretty much on cloud nine this past weekend because we had both kids home for the first time together in well over a year.  Joel Rhein and Katherine flew in from Greenville, SC and Paige and Tanya have been here from California for the past six weeks helping us with everything house related.  What fun we had celebrating Joel's 57th birthday with muffins and mimosas by the lake on Saturday morning!  Grandpa Amidon and Tammy were treated to an inaugural ride down the new road in Paige's Jeep with Tanya right there for moral support as both of them were a tad nervous.  No worries, though.  The MANY loads of Grandpa's mulch held up just fine.

Joel and the girls have been working really hard on landscaping the yard.  Joel Rhein and Katherine added to the property's beauty by presenting Joel with these glorious hydrangea bushes for his birthday.  As an added bonus they planted them as well!

So the friend part of the day came into play when Arielle and Vanessa, Paige's high school pals, joined us to assist in taking a group photo (all three dogs included!) for this year's Christmas card.  I am not going to show you the end result as you will have to wait until December for that, but here are the girls enjoying beverages and breakfast:)

Progress on the exterior of the house continues to thrill me.  Steve and Larry and Dennis have almost completed the siding.  The only thing slowing us down right now is that we ran out of Hardiplank.  Because we decided to angle the ceiling over the outdoor patio we used more siding than initially planned.  Another pallet is on the way.  The plumbers are nearing completion and hopefully the electrician will be finishing up soon as well.  Then it is on to insulation, drywall, and floors!

Roots, Racoon, Rescue Dog, and New Trees!

Although I tried, I could not come up with a suitable "R" word to describe our new Cedar trees... but here they are being planted by Will Olney's crew last Saturday morningWe had them staggered just off the lakeside stoop on the west side of the house to provide a lovely green barrier.  They will grow just a little bit taller and fill out just a bit more over the yearsJoel and Will have discussed the placement of other shrubs and trees once we get the sidewalks and patios installed.

Last night Joel and I headed up to the house to check on the day's progress and water the cedars.  We brought the dogs as they are now trained on the Invisible Fence.  Although they all love their new yard and home, Sadie, our rescue pit mix, is especially curious.  I can't keep up with her as she explores the house upstairs and downstairs and upstairs and downstairs...

I brought lunch to the girls at around noon yesterday and discovered this guy on the road down to the lake.  He did not startle or attempt to move as I approached, so I retreated and called down to the girls to have them be careful on their way up.  Paige shooed him off the path, but he bared his teeth and got grumpy as he fled, so we are all going to be extra careful for the next few days.

Paige and Tanya are now in their 4th week of road construction, and the results are impressive!  Joel took the day off on Tuesday to help them with some of the heavier lifting.  He also trimmed the lower branches of several trees so that vehicles can pass underneath.  They all worked together to level the land a bit to lessen the pitch at the bottom.  This included digging out multiple tree roots.

Meanwhile, the activity level at the house has been at a fevered pitch.  Yesterday Steve and Larry and Dennis continued siding the back part of the east side.  Mark, our electrician, was up in our bedroom installing outlets, boxes, and wires.  The plumbers showed up to work on the hot and cold tubing.  Hopefully today I will be able to take some progress photos of both the inside and outside and post them tomorrow!
